Clutch

Select the issue in order to troubleshoot the clutch:

1. Do you have good battery voltage?

NOTE
11.5 - 13.5 volts is required for proper operation.

2. Did the battery pass a Load Test?

3. Check for good battery voltage at terminals 1 and 4 of the PTO switch with the key in the run position and the PTO switch engaged.

Is battery voltage at the terminals good?

3a. If good battery voltage is not present, disconnect the PTO switch and test for continuity between terminals 1 and 4 with the PTO switch engaged. If no continuity is present, replace the switch?

4. Inspect the PTO fuse in the Fuse Block and test for continuity with the fuse removed to ensure functionality.

Is there continuity?

4a. If continuity is not present, replace the damaged PTO fuse?

5. Test for good battery voltage at the PTO Relay on Terminals 86 and 30 with the key in the run position and the PTO switch engaged?

Is there good voltage at the PTO Relay?

5a. If good battery voltage is not present, remove the PTO relay and conduct a resistance test from pins 85 – 86. Confirm approximately 85-100Ω. If resistance is bad, replace the PTO Relay.

6. Test for good battery voltage at the PTO Clutch with the key in the run position and the PTO engaged.

Do you have good voltage at the PTO Clutch?

6a. If good battery voltage is not present, check for good continuity in all wiring from the PTO fuse to the PTO Clutch. If continuity is not present or wire is found damaged, fix the wire or replace the harness. Lack of continuity could stem from bad contacts in controlled side of PTO relay bench test relay?

7. Disconnect the clutch connector and confirm 2.12 - 2.88Ω on the clutch coil.

Is the clutch connector resistance in specification?

7a. If 2.12 - 2.88Ω was not present at the coil, replace the PTO Clutch. View Procedure

8. Visually inspect any physical damage to the clutch.

Is the clutch physically in good condition?

8a. If physical damage is present, replace the PTO Clutch. View Procedure

9. Check if the center bolt is securely tightened and the clutch does not move along the shaft.

Is the center bolt secured properly?

9a. If the center bolt is loose, ensure the clutch mounting bolt is properly torqued to 47 - 61 ft. lbs.

10. Check if the washer is large enough to cover bearing inner race, is at least 1/4" thick, and is not deformed/cupped.

Is the washer in good condition?

10a. If the washer does not meet this requirement or is deformed, replace with Ariens Part Number 05501240.

11. Check back plate has maximum of 1/16" of play axially and radially.

Is the play of the back plate within tolerance?

11a. If greater axial and radial play is present, replace the PTO Clutch. View Procedure

12. Check that there is no oil on the clutch.

Is the clutch clean of oil?

12a. If oil is found on the clutch and is expected to have entered into the air gap cavity, replace the PTO Clutch. View Procedure
